Smurftastic Naming

June 25, 2011 § Leave a comment

Since the late 50s, The Smurfs have captivated generations of children with their bright blue skin and fun little hats, first as characters in a Belgian comic strip and later in televised cartoons – IGN described it as “kiddie cocaine”. Now parents are going to be rushing their children to the cinema to see a (3D) film version, out in the US next week, and Global Smurfs’ Day recently left this traditional Spanish village feeling a little blue.

If you go here you can be assigned your own Smurf Name (I’m Wack-a-doo Smurf, apparently. Seems pretty accurate – there must be some magic involved).

It would seem that a cast of characters mainly named after their defining feature wouldn’t provide a wealth of naming inspiration, but you’d be wrong; there are some smurftastic options available. * – new for the movie

Girls –

Barbara

Brenda

Denisa

Grace*

Harmony (a male smurf, called Rocker Smurf in the English language-version, which is probably a useful indication of how feminine this name seems)

Laconia

Marina

Odile*

Priscilla

Savina

Boys –

Balthazar

Gerard

Johan

Marco

Painter

Patrick*

Poet

Tracker (a touch of the Sarah Palin about it, but if you like Tucker …)

Woody (Edward)

Either –

Lucky (Lucy, Lucinda, Lucille/Luke, Lucas, Luca)

Maybe not –

Azrael (archangel of death)
